Humorist

Come and see a restoration in progress, rebuilding the original features…

Humorist is one of 23 Derby Winners Class boats designed and built by JS Whites, Isle of Wight. They were ordered by the Army in 1940, Humorist was finally launched in 1943. Like Gay Archer she is built of double diagonal Honduras mahogany with copper rivets and bronze screws, but only has a semi-planing hull as opposed to Gay Archer’s fully planing hull. She was also sealed with a calico layer waterproofed with white lead paste.

At first Humorist was put into service towing targets and as Officer Transport for the 549 Coastal Regiment at North Foreland Battery, near Ramsgate in Kent. She had a complement of 7 crew, and had a small armament “just in case” for defence purposes, usually comprising two Bren light machine guns.

We are still in the process of restoring Humorist, however she features a fully original wheelhouse, outside fittings and mast. Come down to Torquay and you may catch Simon hard at work!
